Your Generator's Wattage

Wattage measures the "volume" of electricity a generator creates. Wattage requirements increase with each additional appliance or piece of equipment you need a generator to power. The smallest generators produce around 800 watts while large industrial generators can produce 500,000 watts (500 kilowatts, or kW) or more. Small businesses typically require generators that can produce 15 kW to 100 kW.

Before choosing a generator, particularly standby generators, you'll need to decide what equipment you want it to run. The "right" size electric generator provides just enough wattage to operate all your essential equipment. Common devices include refrigerators, freezers, security and access control systems, sump pumps, essential lights, electric gates or overhead doors, ejector pumps, well pumps, and septic systems. Keep in mind that every electronic device you add to the list will increase the wattage you need. While a single light bulb will only add 70 watts, a mid-sized central air conditioner can draw 4000 watts or more.

Limit your choices to those devices that are truly essential during a power outage and you'll keep your total costs down. Too few watts and you can overwork the electric generator, potentially damaging it and anything plugged into it. Too many watts and you'll waste money on the initial generator purchase and on fuel. Accurately determining the watts your equipment requires will help you get a generator that can meet your electrical demands without spending too much.

Popular Generator Brands

The Generac Guardian Series is available in 8kW to 60kW power levels. During power shortage, these standby generators immediately turn on within 10 seconds interval - to prevent computer data loss, you need to use an UPS device. The 45kW Generac Guardian Series permanent generators are eco-friendly devices that require less fuel and release less fuel emissions. The weather-resistant casement is made from galvannealed steel with Rhino Coat coating. These are fueled using natural gas or liquefied petroleum (LP). Amazon.com sells this generator for $13,399.00 while Home Depot.com sells this for only $11,061 including the shipping.

Briggs and Stratton 10kW standby generators run on liquefied petroleum or natural gas fuels. This series uses the patented ACCM (air conditioning control module), and provide safe and steady electricity supply to your entire house. The modern casement has a compact design, which makes it great space savers. And the special storm gray finishing protects the casing from extreme weather conditions. These series have a smooth and quiet operation. OnSitePowerGenerators.com sells this for $2,550 - this is quite inexpensive compared to other brands.

Bryant's 8kW-14kW home standby generators come with a 3-year parts and 2-year labor warranties. These are housed in a noise-resistant casing and also run by natural gas or LP fuels. Their products are U.L. certified, which means that these are very safe for public consumption.

Standby Generators for Your Home!

Permanent home standby generators - you also call these as fixed, whole-house, or stationary generators - are mechanical equipments that are capable of supplying electricity during power shortage. These generators are usually ideal if you're planning to hook multiple appliances to one system. There are actually different brands of permanent home standby generators that exist today and each has their own unique products to offer.

Fixed home generators are directly connected to the electrical grid and the city's natural gas pipelines - that's why it's important to check if your city has existing rules or permit requirements before installing these generators. Through the automatic transfer switch, permanent home standby generators are activated during power shortage and deactivated when the regular electricity comes back. The number of appliances that need to run on generator and the total wattage requirements are the first things that homeowners should identify before buying or installing a generator. Electricians or qualified installers can do these for you, so you don't need to worry about it that much.

A Wind Powered Generator?

Wind powered home generators can be an extremely efficient and simple way of saving on your home electricity bills not to mention the advantages this renewable energy source has on the environment compared to the more commonly used and infinitely more expensive fossil fuels like oil, coal, gas etc.

The best thing about wind powered home generators is that they are quite simple to assemble yourself and can be used pretty much anywhere provided the average wind speed is not less than 10mph. Self assembly is quite straight forward and all the required parts and accessories are readily available in a hardware store or on ebay. An appropriate sized windmill needed to fully serve a standard size house can be put together for as little as $150.

Any Other Options for Power Outages?

Of course, there are other options besides a home generator. If it is a cold winter storm, you can always put your foods outside to keep cold. If you have a wood burning stove, then you don't have to worry about heat and you can melt snow for water. If you live out in the country and are on a well, then at least you have running water. But those are a lot of ifs, wouldn't it be better to plan ahead and have a home generator?

Home generators come in many different sizes and power out puts. Though you can, you do not have to spend thousands of dollars. The size and power that you need is dependent upon what you want to power. You do not have to run your entire household during a power outage, you just need the necessities, like heat (or AC) and keeping your food cold, or perhaps some important medical equipment. For under a thousand dollars, you can get a portable home generator to accomplish these basic tasks.

If money is not an issue, you can purchase a more expensive and permanent home generator that will run your entire household. You can also go somewhere in between, something that runs more than the necessities, but not everything. Regardless of what you want, first you have to determine how much energy is needed to run the appliances you want to run, this will dictate the size of the home generator that you need. Next, you have to decide what type of fuel source you want to use. Possibilities include gas, diesel, propane, and natural gas. You will always want to keep some of this fuel on hand, and remember that the smaller the generator, the more often it will need to be refilled. If your home is already hooked up to natural gas or propane, your decision is made already made for you.

Is Free Energy Possible?

Free energy generators are machines that create energy and power using something natural and renewable resources like solar, wind, geothermal and even magnets. While solar energy might bag the price in a popularity contest being its logic well explained and understood, the question is "is it better for you?" This article will show you why magnetic free energy is the right free energy home generator for you. Magnetic motors are devices that take advantage of the natural polarity of magnets to create an indefinite source or magnetic energy.

It is already a common knowledge that magnets are polarized, which results in a natural attraction for magnets with opposite poles and repulsion for those with same poles. It is with the natural repulsion that magnetic motors harness magnetic force to induce perpetual motion and create a permanent restorative loop. Simply put- magnetic energy generators use the magnetic energy to generate electricity, which then powers and further enhances the magnetic charge of the generator. This simply means that the generator can run indefinitely by itself for free with just on its initial charging process.
